BreAnna Branch

I attended UNC Wilmington and received a BS in International Business and a BA in French. During school I spent a year studying abroad in Paris and Marseille, France, and spent a summer volunteering in Senegal, West Africa. After graduation, I spent a year teaching English as a Second Language to elementary students in Aix-les-Bains, France. I started Food For Thought Community Garden in Lumberton to provide fresh, healthy produce for those in need in Robeson County. As I have always been involved in local and international volunteer work, I began considering a career where I could affect meaningful change in people’s lives. This led me to Communities In Schools of Robeson County. I chose CIS because of their fidelity to their standards. I knew I had chosen an organization that truly wanted to help students, but do it in a fiscally responsible and ethical way. Not only can we tell you a heartwarming story, we can provide the data to back it up! I became a Student Support Specialist at Townsend Middle School in Maxton in 2014. I love waking up every day knowing that my purpose is to help my babies reach their full potential! The best part of my job is seeing the advances a child can make when provided with the right supports for their needs. The hardest part of my job is accepting and understanding the difficulties faced by our children in Robeson County.

Townsend Middle School is located in Maxton, North Carolina. Our school has 216 students, made up of mainly African-American and Native American students. Almost all of our students could be titled at-risk, but I work with our faculty and staff to identify students with the most needs that can benefit from the supports offered. Some of the supports offered are: Tutoring, Mentoring, Girls Empowerment Group, Book Club, Drug/Alcohol Prevention, Bullying/Violence Prevention, Nutrition Education, BakPak Pals, and our Clothing Closet. I’m extremely grateful to our volunteers from UNCP and the faculty that help me create and execute our programs.
